A Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) is a support plan created by your GP to help your child access mental health services. It outlines your child's needs, goals, and the best types of therapy for them.
With an MHCP, your child becomes eligible for Medicare-subsidised sessions with registered mental health professionals such as Psychologists and Occupational Therapists.
Why it helps
A Mental Health Care Plan ensures coordinated, evidence-based care, improves access to ongoing support, and reduces the cost of therapy for families — up to 10 subsidised sessions per calendar year.
Book with your GP. Explain your concerns relating to your child's emotional, social, or developmental wellbeing.
Discuss your concerns. Your GP will assess your child's situation to determine if a plan is appropriate.
Request a MHCP referral. Your GP creates the plan, enabling Medicare rebates for up to 10 psychology sessions per year.
Contact CAADS. Call (07) 3482 2457 or email enquiries@caads.com.au to obtain an intake form and book your first appointment.
Start your sessions. Bring the Mental Health Care Plan and referral letter to your child's first appointment.

Most standard psychology and OT sessions run for approximately 50 minutes. Initial consultations may be slightly longer for a full intake and assessment. Counselling session length can vary depending on the nature of the support required.

They can conduct formal assessments (e.g. for ADHD, ASD) and are eligible for Medicare rebates with a Mental Health Care Plan. Counsellors are trained in therapeutic support and relationship counselling but do not conduct formal psychological assessments.
